F-35B Lightning II Prototype

f 35 11

In the relatively early years of the development of the F-35 Lightning II, Rich was commissioned by Lindberg Models to create a scratch-built scale model of the STOVL version of the aircraft, now known as the F-35B.

Originally intended to be used as the master from which future 1:32nd scale kits would be derived,  the build continued to change dramatically as the real aircraft progressed through the development process. Many of the features shown on this early model were changed well before the aircraft went into service.

Sadly Lindberg ended up closing their doors before a final version of this model and the desired kits were ever created. It remains a look at a moment in the progress of the now famous fighter.

The shots shown here are just a few of many taken at various levels of completion.

Image 1:  This is a look at the nearly completed model prior to the installation of the engine and canopy.

Image 2:  A close-up on the cockpit and top air intake for the engine when in hover mode. Notice the side-retracting doors that expose the intake, later replaced with one large door hinged at the back as is now in use on the production version of the airplane.

Image 3:  Here is a close-up look at the cockpit tub prior to being inserted into the model.

Notice the early version of the intake doors that fold toward either side of the fuselage. The combat ready aircraft has a single door that opens toward the rear of the airplane.
