The CH-53 Sea Stallion (Sikorsky S-65) is a family of American heavy-lift transport helicopters designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft. Developed in response to a March 1962 request from the United States Navy’s Bureau of Naval Weapons, the aircraft was intended to replace the Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave used by the United States Marine Corps.

Sikorsky’s proposal, selected in July 1962, was based on a scaled-up S-61R design, equipped with twin General Electric T64 turboshaft engines and incorporating dynamic systems from the S-64/CH-54. The prototype YCH-53A completed its first flight on October 14, 1964, and production deliveries to operational units began on September 12, 1966. The CH-53 entered combat shortly thereafter in the Vietnam War, where it proved highly effective in transporting heavy loads and recovering downed aircraft.

Multiple variants of the Sea Stallion were developed to meet evolving mission requirements. The United States Air Force introduced the HH-53 “Super Jolly Green Giant” for special operations and combat search and rescue missions during the Vietnam War, many of which were later upgraded into the MH-53 Pave Low. The closely related CH-53E Super Stallion, designated S-80E by Sikorsky, incorporated a third engine for increased lifting capability and eventually replaced earlier versions in the heavy-lift role. Over time, many CH-53 aircraft were upgraded with more powerful engines or adapted for specialized missions, including presidential transport, training, and airborne mine countermeasures operations.
