Most builders approach car modelling with the desire to make the car as perfect as possible, replicating a showroom new finish. Not Richard, he is a master at making some of these rare classics look like they have been sitting out in the weather rusting away for years. It may seem funny, but it is difficult to make plastic fenders and door panels appear realistically dented or rusted. Here are a few examples of some of Richard’s amazing illusions of weather damaged vehicles.
Barn-Find Ford
This striking “Barn-Find Ford” diorama captures the essence of a long-forgotten project car frozen in time. Set within a weathered, partially collapsing garage, Rich’s craftsmanship brings a 1953 Ford back to life in miniature form—albeit in rough shape. The faded blue paint, rusted body panels, and missing components tell a story of years of neglect, while the surrounding clutter of parts, tools, and debris adds authenticity to the scene. Every detail, from the sagging roofline to the scattered engine pieces, reflects the quiet decay of a once-proud automobile awaiting restoration.
What makes this piece especially compelling is the realism and narrative it conveys. The open doors, detached hood, and exposed engine suggest a project that was started but never finished, leaving behind a sense of mystery and history. Rich’s attention to texture—aged wood, corroded metal, and dusty surfaces—creates an immersive snapshot of a bygone era of backyard mechanics and forgotten dreams. It’s not just a model; it’s a story of time, abandonment, and the enduring hope that one day, the old Ford might run again.
Stutz and the Raven
This miniature diorama captures the haunting beauty of a long-forgotten Stutz, its once-proud form now reduced to a rusted skeleton overtaken by time and nature. The vehicle rests partially embedded in a weathered embankment, its faded green paint peeling back to reveal deep layers of corrosion. Twisted fenders, a collapsed grille, and exposed mechanical parts suggest decades of abandonment, while the careful weathering details, from flaking metal to scattered debris, create a strong sense of realism. Small patches of grass and moss begin to reclaim the wreck, blending the car into the surrounding landscape.
A solitary raven stands perched on the decaying chassis, adding a dramatic and symbolic presence to the scene. Its dark form contrasts with the earthy tones of rust and soil, drawing attention and giving the piece a quiet, reflective mood. The scene feels still and timeless, telling a story of neglect, endurance, and the slow return of man-made objects to nature. This model goes beyond a simple display and becomes a narrative frozen in miniature form.
