Bireme - Ancient Oared Warship

Rich constructed this detailed replica of a bireme, an ancient oared warship widely used in classical antiquity. Biremes were employed by several early naval powers, including the Romans, and were in service during periods such as Julius Caesar’s second invasion of Britain. The design later evolved into the trireme, which featured an additional bank of oars and greater naval capability.

In historical use, a unit commandant, often accommodated in a tented structure on the open deck, would direct a complement of marines during operations. Depictions of biremes also appear in ancient Assyrian reliefs from the eighth and early seventh centuries BC, where similar vessels were used in amphibious assaults along the coast of Elam and in the lagoons of the Persian Gulf during the reign of Sennacherib.
