Hellcat On Deck
The Grumman F6F Hellcat has secured its place in history as one of the most effective carrier-based fighters of World War II.
This custom-built model, titled Hellcat On Deck, depicts the aircraft on the deck of a World War II-era aircraft carrier with one wing extended in a ready position and the opposite wing folded. The folding wing design was essential for carrier operations, allowing aircraft to be stored more efficiently and maximizing the number of aircraft that could be carried aboard ship.
Carrier decks of the period were constructed of wooden planks, and this model faithfully replicates that detail. Note Rich’s meticulously scratch-built deck surface, which captures the texture, layout, and operational character of wartime carrier aviation.
Here we show the Grumman F6F Hellcat mounted on a simulated wooden carrier deck base, with one wing folded and the other extended in a ready position, depicting the aircraft preparing for deployment into combat.
